The unveiling of PRE-SAFE® from Mercedes-Benz in 2002 was prompted first and foremost by one simple observation: road accidents are preceded by valuable seconds which generally go wasted. PRE-SAFE® (optional extra) is able to use this time to great effect. The ESP® and BAS sensory system recognises critical driving situations, such as heavy oversteer or understeer, abrupt steering movements, as well as panic or emergency braking.

The PRE-SAFE® electronics evaluate this information and, in typical hazardous situations, can initiate preventive measures to protect the occupants: the front passenger seat can be moved into a more favourable position (in conjunction with the memory package optional extra), the side windows and the optional panoramic glass sunroof can be closed and the seat belts tensioned.
