The majority of accidents start long before the actual collision: with a lapse in concentration, poor visibility or hazards which cannot be anticipated. We have therefore fitted the new E-Class Coupé with a range of safety features which promote relaxed motoring and help you to bring critical situations under control.
- ADAPTIVE BRAKE braking system with HOLD function: with the dry-braking function brief braking impulses in wet driving conditions skim off the layer of water formed on the brake discs so that if needed the brakes can act with full effect. The HOLD function can be activated by the driver and prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards. The adaptive brake light warns following traffic of an emergency stop. If the driver brakes hard, quickly or suddenly, a red blinking signal appears instead of the conventional brake light. When the car comes to a standstill the hazard warning flasher is switched on.
- LED tail lights: both the tail lights and brake lights plus the third brake light employ LEDs, which are significantly faster than conventional bulbs. During a full brake application the adaptive brake light warns following traffic of the danger via a flashing third brake light.
- ATTENTION ASSIST: If there is a danger of the driver falling asleep momentarily at the wheel, ATTENTION ASSIST suggests taking a break. The system monitors the driver’s behaviour in particular by using a special steering angle sensor on the steering column. If it deviates from the previously registered driver profile, visual and audible warnings are emitted.
- Intelligent Light System: This optional system improves visibility in the dark by adjusting its bi-xenon headlamps to the current driving situation. For instance, the illumination is wider on a country road, while on motorways the range is increased significantly. The system also features enhanced fog lamps as well as active light and cornering light functions and the adaptive High-Beam Assist. This makes it possible to detect pedestrians, bicyclists or other obstacles earlier on than with conventional low-beam headlamps. The system reduces glare for other road users and also optimises the available street lighting. Using a camera the headlamp range adjustment and main beams are controlled such that the road, independent of the driving situation and the preceding road users, receives optimal illumination. The main beams are automatically switched on if no other road users are detected. What's special about this is that abrupt changes in light intensity are avoided and replaced instead by gentle transitions.
